Broken Tooth
Do you have a broken tooth due to a fall, from biting down on something hard, or from blunt physical trauma? No need to worry! At Comfort Family Dental, we have the tools and training necessary to relieve your pain and restore your smile.
At our Chicago, Illinois office we consider a broken tooth a dental emergency. It is important to restore your tooth as soon as possible, before any further damage occurs.
Severity of damage can range from small chips and fractures to complete breaks where a portion of the tooth breaks off. Not all patients experience severe pain when breaking a tooth. With more minor breaks you may feel some discomfort and sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. We encourage our patients to be mindful of their oral health so that any problems can be caught and taken care of immediately.
WHAT TO DO AFTER A BROKEN TOOTH
If your break is severe and a portion or all of your tooth has fallen out, place the tooth into a glass of milk for temporary preservation. We encourage you to see your dentist as soon as possible to restore your broken tooth and prevent any further damage.
For smaller, less obvious breaks, schedule an appointment with your dentist to restore your tooth. When teeth break, they are at greater risk for cavities and decay. It is important to stay up-to-date with your bi-yearly cleanings and examinations so that any minor problems can be diagnosed and treated.
Pain Management
In between the time of breaking the tooth and seeing a professional, we recommend managing your pain with ibuprofen or Tylenol. This will provide temporary relief before the tooth can be completely restored.
BROKEN TOOTH RESTORATIONS
At Comfort Family Dental, our main goal when restoring a damaged tooth is to do all we can to help the patient keep their natural tooth. In some cases, it is possible to reattach the broken portion onto the lasting tooth.
Dental implants are a great restorative option to consider if the entire tooth needs to be extracted due to major damage. Dental implants offer a permanent restoration that includes a titanium implant that secures a full, custom-made, artificial tooth into the jaw bone.
Dental crowns are a solution when a part of the tooth can remain in the mouth but the outer portion, the crown, needs to be replaced. Our dental crowns are custom made to fit the exact shape and color of your existing teeth.
Fillings and bonding are used to restore minor chips and fractures. The tooth-colored composite resin fills in the crack or chip. Once hardened, the strong bonding material serves to replace the tooth enamel.
