Auburn Gresham is community area 71 on Chicago's far south side, using part of the 60620 ZIP code. It sits northeast of Beverly along the corridor that leads to our office at 2036 West 95th Street, and it is reachable from most of the neighborhood by bus as easily as by car.
One piece of history worth knowing: the South Side Irish Parade started here, before it moved southwest to Beverly, where it runs today.
How the neighborhood was built
Auburn Gresham's development goes back to the early nineteenth century, when the area was defined by small German and Dutch settlements. An influx of Irish railroad workers and others drawn to the South Side by newly extended city services in the late 1800s pushed both residential and commercial growth.
The real boom came in the 1920s, when the population grew nearly threefold — from about 19,500 to over 57,000 in a single decade. The bungalows and brick two-flats that fill the neighborhood today are the physical record of those years. The Auburn Gresham Bungalow Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, takes in 264 brick Chicago bungalows built between 1918 and 1932.
Like most South Side communities, Auburn Gresham went through blockbusting and white flight during the 1960s. The neighborhood was nearly entirely white in 1960 and was 69 percent Black by the 1970 census. Its residents today are mostly African American.
Institutions that anchor it
St. Sabina Church, led by Father Michael Pfleger, has been central to the neighborhood's redevelopment, with new housing and storefronts opening around it. One of the largest new single-family home developments in Chicago is nearing completion at 87th and Parnell in the south-east corner of the community area.
The Thurgood Marshall branch of the Chicago Public Library opened at 75th and Racine in April 1994 — 13,500 square feet, with a 125-seat auditorium, a reading garden and several installed artworks. The St. Leo Campus for Veterans is here, housing Catholic Charities' St. Leo's Residence, an outpatient clinic, a veterans' garden and the Pope John Paul II Residence. Auburn Gresham is also home to the first urban SOS Children's Village in the United States.
Perspectives Leadership Academy and Perspectives Technology Academy operate in the building that was Calumet High School, which opened its doors to neighborhood students in 1919 and was one of Chicago's oldest high schools.
Getting to us without a car
This matters here more than in some of the neighborhoods we serve, so it is worth being specific. The 95th Street bus runs directly past our door. CTA Red Line stops at 79th and 87th along the Dan Ryan, in neighboring Chatham, connect to it. Gresham station, on the Metra Rock Island line at 87th and Vincennes, provides inbound service to LaSalle Street and outbound to Joliet.
Community leaders have pushed for years for an additional Metra stop at 79th Street. The City acquired land for the Auburn Park station in 2014, and construction has been underway.
